I drove from Connecticut to New Jersey today.  It was one of those spectacularly comfortable days with a clear blue set off beautifully by lush white puffy cumulus clouds and a gentle breeze to whisk any accumulating heat away ever so sweetly.  I timed it so I would be through the Cross Bronx Expressway (CBE) before rush hour traffic began…or so I thought.  It turned out that I reached the major New York highways perfectly in time to crawl slowly along the CBE to the George Washington Bridge in bumper to bumper traffic for three hours.  With cell phone hooked up to the car Bluetooth and CDs I’ve been looking forward to listening to, I relaxed into the experience and made a call.

A friend who I have been coaching since January mentioned that she had recommended coaching with Power & Purpose to a friend who said that she can’t see how coaching could help her since she had no idea of what she wanted to do.  My response was “How wonderful! When we have run out of ideas about doing we can begin to focus on being!”

Until we begin to consciously choose who we are being it really doesn’t matter what we choose to do since the results of our doing will continue to be the same…at best temporarily exciting, after which we  fall back into unsatisfied.  We can change jobs, change partners, change diets, change clothing, change cars, even change professions yet if the energy behind our decisions remains the same it will be an updated production of the same story we’ve been living out for as long as we can remember.

Patterns of energy determine our being.  We have access to these patterns through our ability to observe our repetitive patterns of thinking.  These repetitive patterns of thinking are neural networks.  It has been found that neural networks are a whole organism phenomena.  Neural networks are energetic patterns or frequencies that we emit that are established very early in our experience as individualized beings.

One of the most unconscious energetic patterns is “backwards” thinking.  This is thinking about what happened in the past that we didn’t like, thought should not have happened, or should have happened differently.  It’s rehashing in our minds over and over again what so and so said or did that was insulting or inappropriate, or what happened that was bad, wrong, etc. This pattern engages our psyche, our nervous system, and our immune system; all of which communicate constantly with every cell in our body.  It is our way of creating an integral self, and broadcasting that self into our collective reality, for better or worse.

When we find ourselves thinking this way we are being “depreciation”.  To depreciate means “1. to diminish in value, 2. to disparage; belittle, 3. to reduce the purchasing power of.”*1 It also means “1. to express disapproval of or a wish against; deplore; plead earnestly against, 2. a) express disapproval of ; reprove. b) archaic pray against.”*2 There is an alternative to being depreciation.

Being “appreciation” is “1. a) to esteem highly; value, b) be grateful for, c) be sensitive to , 2. understand; recognize, 3. a) rise in value, b) raise in value. “* 3  It looks like keeping your mind’s eye on what you intend to create rather than what is showing up that you don’t like.  Being appreciation is allowing others to be who they are being and innovating approaches to moving towards your desires. It is being true to your vision of what is possible and learning from comments made or situations that appear that allow you to become aware of what disturbs your energy in such a way as you lose focus on what you intend to create.  It allows for understanding, recognition, adding value to all experiences.

People and situations are only obstacles when we continue to bang into them.  When we innovate new approaches to our objectives, create new paths, then that which we deemed obstacles becomes curious features of the collective landscape of being.  They move or remain as their nature dictates, as we continue on our way.

In the 1990′s Landmark Education used the adage, “Skip the complaint and get to the request.” As we evolve I rephrase as “Skip the complaint and continue innovating a path to that which you desire.” Let’s appreciate our experience of life so life can appreciate.
